Worst Date Turned Into Best
by Quizmo LaGrande
Recently man-less, I was going through a very rough time. My brother constantly tried to fix-me-up with his shady acquaintances.
One morning when I was dressed and ready to walk to the school where I work, brother appears with a fellow about my age who had a nice dog (a good sign).
Brother introduces us and this guy tells me first-off how much he loves to read (I’m a librarian) and he comments on all the things we have in common. Hmmm? He had a nice voice, was well spoken, seemed well mannered and intelligent enough, but a little odd.
Being a polite, yet unwitting hostess so early in the morning with a few minutes to spare, I inserted few questions. Mostly he offered…. He got his law degree at Cornell Univ. He was now restructuring failing law firms. His father was the CEO for MIT… and the buck stopped quickly for me when I got, “Mom is a nuclear physicist who’s retired from Area 51.”
Good-bye Charlie, or whatever-your-name-is, “It was nice to meet you.” I smiled and declared, “I have to go now.”
But NO! It was not good-bye.
I was more than surprised to find him, and his dog, by my side escorting me to my job.
He talked the whole two long blocks. He confessed jail time, and other misdoings… none of which his fault, of course! I remained politely silent.
One too many tabs of acid was all I could think about for this hippie-type character.
When we reached the school grounds, one of my co-workers was busy locking a side gate. I dashed up the steps and “thanked” her for letting me in.
I waved to the fellow, hastily wished him good luck and turned my back.
I told my peer of the incredulous event that just happened and we both started laughing.
Soon I was the talk of the school from that little “date”and I still occasionally get teased about.it.
I forgot my woes and pulled right out of the doldrums. I was feeling happy and humorous again.
I met a proper fella just days afterward. So somehow, that worst date, turned into a best.
