Prince Charming
by Dayle Turner
It was the Fall of 1994 - one of the loneliest times of my life.
I was over 40, estranged from my family, relocated in a big city, living in a cold basement apartment, driving a junky old car, barely making a living, working 2 jobs I loathed, and overweight.
My Saturday Nights were spent with my special cat Pookie, and favorite comfort foods. Little wonder I was fat and dateless.
But I had to attend a Christmas Party in a few months, and didn’t want to bring a “girlfriend” as my guest. So I took a big risk and invited a casual associate who was also going through a difficult time, having recently separated from his wife and 2 sons. To my great surprise and relief, he agreed to be my “escort”.
Finally, something to look forward to!
Over the next 3 months, I put myself on a serious new diet and exercise program, and watched myself shrink about 3 dress sizes and 25 pounds! Along with a few other changes in my life, I felt “alive” again!
When my date picked me up for that Party, his first reaction was “Wow!” The whole evening was like a “Cinderella” dream, it was simply magical.
We dined, danced, talked, and laughed the night away — with mutual sparks … when we least expected it! That goodnight kiss marked the beginning of a beautiful relationship. Our friendship had caught fire, from kindred spirits, to best friends, to total commitment.
It has been almost 13 years since that first date, and we have never been apart, nor has the chemistry ever fizzled.
Through all life’s ups and downs, joys and sorrows, we have grown up and grown closer, and now my handsome “Prince” is fighting Cancer with a grim prognosis.
As heartbreaking as this has been, it cannot destroy our special bond, and has only reinforced the love we share.
I still hope and pray for a “happily ever after” ending, and whatever cards fate deals us, I feel such gratitude for everything. Especially that all important First Date that changed both our lives forever.
